Northpower has expanded from its Northland home base and grown into a multi-million dollar business working with Australasia's largest electricity networks. We have 13 depots across the North Island of New Zealand.
We’re a vibrant company providing electricity generation (hydro) and electricity distribution to over 60,000 consumers in Whangārei and Kaipara Districts. We helped establish Whangārei as New Zealand's first ultra-fast broadband city. We also deliver innovative inspection network services, inspection technologies and electrical contracting services (distribution, transmission, fibre and gas).
As an engineering intern, cadet, or graduate with Northpower, whether your time with us is short or long term, you'll gain thorough insight and understanding into the many facets of electrical engineering. Safety, team, trust, and accountability are the core values that underpin the culture at Northpower. People thrive because of the tight team spirit and ability to advance through ongoing training and study.
In addition to our engineering career opportunities, we hire a number of electricity trade trainees throughout the North Island in a variety of different roles. The most common trainee roles we recruit for are line mechanics, cable jointers, and electrical fitters.
If you're interested in one of these trainee opportunities, please sign up to our Careers website and when a trainee intake is happening in your area you'll be notified.
This depends on the engineering role. For a Design Estimator, responsibilities can include preparing design and pricing solutions for the Underground distribution network be it replacement of HV switchgear, transformer or cabling. A typical day can entail getting out in the field to understand project scope/requirements, procuring materials, preparing and submitting detailed pricing summaries to the client. When they aren’t pricing, they can assist project managers in creating and updating project schedules, handling of technical queries from the client and monthly project billing.
For an Asset Engineer the role can be quite varied and a typical day is something that always changes. On the planning side it can involve analysing the network in its current state to locate any voltage, thermal or resilience constraints and issues, as well estimate what future loads and constraints might look like. Operational engineering work involves evaluating network load against historical load data to proposed network configurations for planned maintenance or faults outages.
An engineering role with Northpower provides unique exposure to a variety of areas within the organisation and provides the opportunity for a well-rounded experience across many operational aspects of an electricity distribution company.
We're ideally looking for current electrical engineering students to fulfill our internships and degree holders for our graduate vacancies. Our cadetships are more suitable for those who haven't already commenced study or chosen a specialization.
Candidates need to have the specified educational requirements for the particular role they are applying for. Beyond that, we're looking for people who can show us they can take initiative and work as part of a team.
You can apply for any job you might see advertised on our website by submitting your CV and completing our application form. If you can't see any positions that match your requirements right now, you can sign up to our Careers website for notifications of new roles.
Our Recruitment team will review your CV against others received for a vacancy. You'll be notified if you're to be invited for an interview or if you're unsuccessful. If you're successful in your interview, you may be required to undertake some pre-employment checks and from there we'll advise you of the outcome of your application.
Our interns typically partner with other staff who introduce them to different aspects of our electricity network through observation and practical learning. You will be able to put your knowledge into practise and assist with projects.
Most years we offer this opportunity. Please sign up to our careers website to be notified of any openings.
