We can help you work safely if you're doing home maintenance or repairs like roofing, spouting, painting and water blasting, DIY electrical work, tree trimming or installing scaffolding anywhere near powerlines.
Talk to us about arranging a temporary power disconnection while you do the work.
Repairs to roofing, spouting, painting, water-blasting, tree trimming and scaffolding may be dangerous if carried out close to overhead service lines - the lines connecting a home or business to the lines and poles in the street. To stay safe you must apply for a Temporary (Safety) Disconnection Service to have the power temporarily disconnected when working near overhead service lines. The law does allow homeowners to do certain electrical work if they comply with the following national standards:
But, we recommend you use a licensed electrician unless you have previous experience. Installing your own wiring or fixing appliances is not as simple as it may seem, and puts you at risk of electric shock or causing a fire. You should also comply with the following safety precautions:
In most cases it's free to have power disconnected between Monday to Friday 7.30 am to 4 pm as long as you allow us 2 working days to process your request.
Please provide us with your name and contact number; the address of the property where the disconnection will happen; the ICP (Installation Control Point) number of the property where the disconnection will happen and the date and time you would like the power to be disconnected.
You can find your ICP number on the meter box or on your power bill.
Please note that safety (temporary) disconnection requests take around 2 working days. If you need a safety disconnection urgently, after hours, on a weekend or public holiday please call us on 0800 10 40 40. Please note a charge will apply for this service.
When you apply for a Temporary Disconnection Service you will be required to let us know the date and time that you would like your disconnection actioned and when you would like your power reconnected. We will contact you to advise when we can complete your request.
If any electrical work has been carried out, we need to see the electrical certificate of compliance from your electrician before we turn the power back on.
Sometimes an inspection will be required, however we'll let you know if this is required when you make your temporary disconnection booking.
Please allow a minimum of 2 working days to process your request. If you need a safety disconnection urgently, after hours, on a weekend or public holiday please call us on 0800 10 40 40. Please note a charge will apply for this service.
