Line Mechanic

Line Mechanics install, repair and maintain overhead and underground power lines.

They erect or replace power poles, string cables between poles, test lines and circuits, locate and repair faults, install electricity transformers and connect equipment to the network.

Skills and knowledge you’ll learn

  • How electricity works and the systems used
  • Technical and practical skills, including the ability to use and care for equipment
  • Understanding industry safety regulations
  • Reading plans and maps
  • First aid skills, including how to perform CPR

Personal requirements

  • Reliable
  • Able to work well in a team and on your own
  • Safety-conscious
  • Able to work under pressure
  • Able to follow instructions

Team Leader/Manager

Cable Jointer

Cable Jointers install, repair and maintain underground power lines. They run cables, join cables, test lines and circuits, locate and repair faults, install ground mounted electricity equipment and connect equipment to the network.

Team Leader/Manager

Project Manager

Project Managers have the overall responsibility of managing delivery of projects from beginning to end, usually improving or adding value to the business.

They define project deliverables, manage the project delivery timelines, manage communication with stakeholders and project team members, forecast and manage the budget and resources, produce and update all project documentation, meet project goals safely, on time and to the required standard.

Skills and knowledge you’ll learn:

  • Project management methodology
  • Tendering (pricing)
  • Scoping works
  • Identifying risks and issues that could impact the project and put in place solutions
  • Program writing (Microsoft Project)
  • Pricing (JDE Pricing Tool)
  • Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Contract interpretation (Contract Law)
  • Acquisition of Plant
  • Dispute resolution
  • Project documentation/deliverables (H&S, PMP, SSPMP, Environmental Plans etc.)
  • Variation pricing and execution
  • Developing, piloting and implementing new business processes
  • Understanding the strategic direction, structure, and issues facing the organisation
  • Payment claims (Microsoft Excel)

Personal requirements

  • Organised and accurate, with an eye for detail
  • Ability to distill all information/advice to find the best way
  • Excellent at communication and negotiation
  • Willing to make hard and unpopular decisions where necessary
  • Skilled in writing and presenting

Length of training

2 - 3 years to junior level
3 - 6 years to intermediate level
6 - 10 years to senior level (depending on area of expertise)

Career path

Project Manager

Instructional Designer

Instructional Designers create learning material for our different training requirements.

This may include the following:

  • Developing eLearning modules
  • Build training video clips
  • Developing and publishing quick reference guides

You’ll be a critical part of our Learning and Development Team and will be in contact with our subject matter experts and the wider team.

Skills and knowledge you’ll learn

  • Using software such as Articulate 360, Powtoon and Microsoft Office
  • Key principles in adult learning
  • Keyboard and computing skills
  • Communication skills

Personal requirements

  • Organised, able to prioritise and multi-task
  • Good communication and writing skills
  • Able to work well in a team environment
  • Able to problem solve and show initiative

Trainer

Trainer

Trainers deliver learning material to our people. Trainers may be a specialist in the electrical field or a general trainer where it’s not critical to have an electrical qualification.

General trainers may be used in the following areas:

  • Inductions
  • Specialist IT training
  • IT application roll outs
  • Leadership
  • Health and safety systems
  • Cadet training courses

Training may be delivered in a classroom environment or remotely via apps like Microsoft Teams. As your skills, knowledge and experience grow, you’ll be the “go to” person for a wide range of topics.

You’ll be a critical part of our Learning and Development Team and will be in contact with people across Northpower from the executive leadership team all the way to electrical utility workers.

Skills and knowledge you’ll learn

  • Using software such as Articulate 360, Powtoon and Microsoft Office
  • Adult learning level 4
  • Keyboard and computing skills
  • Communication skills

Personal requirements
