Building great careers locally

Published 11 May 2023
Cadets 4

The electricity supply industry will play a vital role in New Zealand’s future, with exciting career options for young talent.

At Northpower we are committed to building great careers for local young people through our trade and engineering cadetship programmes, both with pathways into full–time employment. Northpower was thrilled to welcome the next generation of Lines and Cables and Northtec trade cadets to the Northpower whānau on 17th of April.

This group of cadets were selected through an online application process, then invited to attend an open day which included a speed meet session with our managers. Following the open day, a shortlisted candidates were invited to face-to-face interviews. From more than 95 applicants 14 successful Cadets started employment journey with our Northpower whānau.

The Trades Cadets programme is an initial 8 week work readiness programme which includes the NZ Certificate Level 2 in Electricity Supply along with Northpower works site and work practice familiarisation.

The programme is being hosted at the Te Pukenga Northtec campus, for both classroom and practical training, with training is provided by specialist training partner Lines and Cables Limited. A cultural competency workshop, and a noho marae visit will be hosted by Te Pukenga Northec later in May. At the end of the eight weeks, the cadets will be work ready and will join their teams on 19 June.

The programme is the first of many planned, with an aim of training 50 cadets in 2023 and 100 next year. The Northtec campus will be providing classrooms and outside space for practical learning.

Our Engineering Cadets programme is offered in collaboration with the Te Pukenga, offering cadets the opportunity to complete residential study alongside on the job learning to achieve their NZ Diploma in Engineering (Electrical) Level 6. This course will be commencing later in 2024.
