Northpower employs around 1300 people nationwide and is focussed on developing young people in our sector – providing local employment and addressing the skills shortage in the industry.
We are partnering with Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) to provide a mixed model academic and practical qualification – the NZ Diploma in Engineering. We currently have 14 cadets in this programme, all on paid three-year scholarships. Four cadets are based in Northland – allowing our local young talent to study, develop their career and work close at home.
One of those is 20 year old Alyssa Paki who was looking to do something different after five years in retail. Last year she received an electrical training cadetship – a joint initiative between Northpower and People Potential. Part of the cadetship included six weeks of in-house training working alongside our network team in Whangārei. Alyssa’s potential shone through, and she was awarded a Northpower engineering scholarship to undertake the MIT programme.
“I get to help out with projects, gain practical experience which helps me with my studies and the support that I have from my colleagues at Northpower is invaluable,”
Not only has Alyssa continued to achieve, scoring top grades this year, but she is excited about a future in the power industry.
"It’s been a real highlight working with the engineers and I can definitely see this as my future career. It’s such a great opportunity to work for an awesome company.”
Alyssa is an amazing addition to our team and has a very bright future. Anyone interested in being considered for future scholarship opportunities should email us to register your interest at career@northpower.com.
