Blasting transmission towers in preparation for refurbishment is one of the most physically challenging jobs in the field.
We want to make sure our teams are kitted out with the best safety options and protective gear.
We partnered with manufacturer Swazi to design and test an innovative blast suit that's a first of its kind.
Previous suits were bulky, multi-layered and difficult to move in.
The new suit is 60% lighter with improved safety features.
Our Kapiti-based field staff were the first to test the new blast suit and couldn't believe the difference in lower levels of fatigue and improved comfort and functionality due to vastly improved manoeuvrability.
The new design and lack of excess fabric also eliminates snagging on the towers or pole straps.
Our blast suits won the "Safety Innovation Award" category at the 2016 Transpower STAR (Safety Thanks and Recognition) awards - transpower.co.nz.
The STAR awards recognise safety excellence in New Zealand's electricity transmission industry.
The new blast suits have been so successful that requests for the new design have been coming from line crews up and down the country, as well as from outside industries.
