Whangarei Boys Take out Challenge - Powered by Northpower & Top Energy
This year’s Tai Tokerau Tall ship Challenge was a close run contest, with the lead changing hands several times during the competition. However eventually Whangarei Boys High School clinched the top of the table spot, taking the trophy for their school. There was strong competition from Kaitaia College who came a close second.
Throughout the 7-day challenge, a variety of competitions were held which allowed the teams to win points. “Not all of them were about physical fitness either, commented executive trustee” Jane Hindle. There were plenty of mental challenges and ones that tested the creative ability of the sail trainees too. Apart from swimming round the ship every day, challenges such as spelling “The Quick Brown Fox” using the phonetic alphabet, and creating the best desert called for quite different skills. Spot bunk checks, rowing “The Queen” round the ship with only paddle, and making baggywrinkles, not to mention regular visits from dolphins and a snorkelling trip out at the Poor Knights all made for a memorable trip”.
In presenting the Tai Tokerau Tall Ship Challenge trophy, Steven James from Top Energy told the sail trainees that they and their counterparts Northpower were delighted to sponsor the event which encouraged youngsters from the region to challenge themselves and develop their leadership potential.
