Entries are now open for the third Tai Tokerau Tall Ship Challenge, sponsored by Top Energy and Northpower. This annual competition is open to 3 schools from the Whangarei/Kaipara districts and 2 schools from the Far North District, with two students on each team taking part.

The two Northland lines companies fully sponsor the places for the competition so there is no cost for the schools or students in taking part. They do, however, need to have what it takes to represent their school and part of the selection process involves the two students creating an item (essay, presentation, picture, poem) entitled “Safety at Sea”.

The Challenge voyage itself takes the teams up the coast of Northland on board Northland’s tall ship the R. Tucker Thompson, departing from Marsden Cove, Whangarei and arriving 7-days later at Opua. During the week, the selected teams will compete against each other to win the challenge trophy for their school.

Challenges on board during the voyage will be both physical and mental and will require the schools to not just work as an individual team but also part of the wider team that sails the ship. Points will be awarded to those that show leadership and teamwork as well as to the winners of individual challenges.

Winners in previous years have been Bream Bay College and Whangarei Boys High School.

Application forms and further information can be found on the R. Tucker Thompson’s website Tai Tokerau Challenge , emailing youth@tucker.co.nz or phoning 0800 TUCKER.  Schools are strongly recommended to get their applications early.
