Tai Tokerau Tall Ship Challenge - Powered by Northpower and Top Energy
Northpower and Top Energy have both confirmed they will jointly sponsor the inaugural Te Tai Tokerau Tall Ship Challenge, which casts off on the 13th May 2010. Northpower will be sponsoring schools from the Kaipara and Whangarei districts and Top Energy will be sponsoring those from the Far North.
The Te Tai Tokerau Tall Ship Challenge, which is to be held each autumn, is a competition between participating schools to find out which team can demonstrate they have what it takes in terms of leadership, initiative, and of course – teamwork. The seven day event is open to five schools each season and will take place this year from the 13th - 19th May, in the waters off Northland’s East Coast.
Teamwork will be an important part of the selection process for the winning students - who will not only have to demonstrate they can work with their own school mates, but also with crew members from competing schools too. Their days on board will include hard physical work, some mental challenges, as well as a lot of fun both on and off the ship.
“It is a natural fit in keeping with our commitment to focus on developing youth in our region. It is important that the opportunity is provided for the participants to learn valuable life skills such as leadership, teamwork and communication and through this experience will build character that will steer them well in their chosen paths. We couldn’t think of a better place to partake of this challenge than on an iconic Northland treasure such as the R Tucker Thompson. We wish all three schools in our region the best for the Te Tai Tokerau Tall Ship Challenge.” commented Darren Mason, Fibre and Marketing Manager from Northpower.
The five schools signed up to this year’s Te Tai Tokerau Challenge are Whangarei Girls High School, Bream Bay College, Dargaville High School, Opononi Area School and Whangaroa College. The voyage departs from Marsden Cove on Thursday 13th May and returns to Opua on Wednesday
19th May.
