Praise for Northpower

Northpower’s first steps into high-speed broadband in Northland has been illuminated with a national award.
The Whangarei based lines company has won the Next Generation Fibre-Optic Network Award in the 2009 Telecommunications Users Association of New Zealand Innovation Awards.
Judges praised Northpower saying in just 18 months Northpower has built one of the most advanced open access fibre to the premise next generation networks.
Northpower chief executive Mark Gatland acknowledges TelstraClear for partnering with Northpower to build a successful commercial model and staff for their commitment and tireless efforts for making this happen.
“We have rapidly implemented over 100km of overhead and underground fibre using existing power lines and ducts,” he says.
The network is capable of deliverong up to 1000 megabits per second upload and download speeds.
The network uses electricity infrastructure and the partnership with TelstraClear puts Northpower at the forefront of high-speed broadband in New Zealand.
The separation of infrastructure assets from retailer products allows Northpower to focus on the construction of cost-effective fibre-optic networks to international standards.
Mr Gatland says through its experience in Northland, Northpower can see the benefits of fibre optic networks in regions.
Northpower is part of the New Zealand Regional Fibre Group which aims to deliver the government’s goal of high speed broadband to 75 percent of the population in 10 years.
