Power poles vault homes
Concrete powerpoles soared gracefully over the roofs of houses in the Whangarei suburb of Onerahi on Monday during work on a line upgrade.
Lines company Northpower was upgrading 6000m of 11,000-volt line as well as 13 steel poles that were put in place in 1987.
Project supervisor Barry Holland was part of the team that hand dug the pole holes 25 years ago.
Most of the holes are dug by diggers these days, however two had to be hand dug because of difficult access, Mr Holland said.
The same tricky access meant Northpower had to call in a 100-tonne crane to lift the powerpoles over houses before slotting them into place.
The line improvement, which has seen two crews working over six weeks, affects 170 houses in Onerahi.
