Wellington Electricity Lines Limited (Wellington Electricity) has selected and agreed contractual terms with Northpower Limited (Northpower) to provide fault response, maintenance, and some capital services, says Chief Executive Greg Skelton.
“Northpower were selected as the preferred Service Provider after a robust and competitive selection process was undertaken and proposals considered.”
“The objective of the selection process was always to make changes to our operating model to better align our maintenance and capital requirements with our asset management strategies. We are confident that through the selection of Northpower we’ll meet this objective.”
Northpower is one of the largest multi-utility contractors in New Zealand with a reputation for excellence and innovation. Northpower will assume responsibility for services from 1 January 2011.
Northpower Chief Executive Mark Gatland says: “we are delighted to have been selected to provide fault response, maintenance, and some capital services to Wellington Electricity.”
Mr Skelton says: “We’ve made major investments in our information technology systems in Wellington and have outlined significant capital and operational expenditure in the Wellington network over the next 10 years subject to satisfactory regulatory outcomes. The Company is committed to building and operating a safe, reliable and quality network in the Wellington region.”
As a Company operating in a regulated market we must always demonstrate value for money and cost effectiveness across all of our operations. Our shareholders, consumers and regulators like the Commerce Commission all expect this. And we have to respond.
“While cost is an important factor it is just one of a number of considerations aimed at maintaining one of New Zealand’s most reliable electricity distribution networks. It is in everyone’s interests that the lights remain on in Wellington.”
Mr Skelton said that the current maintenance and fault response contract with Siemens will continue to be performed until expiry on 31 December 2010 and will have a short change-over period into the New Year.
