How Fibre works
How Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) works
Our Fibre network is based on the Fibre to the premises (FTTP) technology. It is standards based on the IEEE 802.3ah EPON standards (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) and offers minimum performance of at least 10 times that of the best ADSL2+ speeds and with fully symmetric upload and download speeds. This means that we are able to provide up to 1000Mb/s connectivity to homes and businesses. This is not just at a couple of kilometres as with ADSL2+ but up to twenty kilometres from the base electronic equipment. We are currently providing this technology for businesses in the Whangarei Central Business District.
Technology developments currently underway on this standard will see these speeds increase even further by a factor of ten. It must be remembered that these speeds are on the Northpower Fibre component of the Network. We remove the speed bottlenecks of oversubscription on the local access component.
