Light tinged with breast-cancer hope
Northern Advocate, Whangarei
Whangarei’s landmark Old Town Hall is in the pink in an effort to raise awareness of breast cancer. The building, on Bank St, will be lit up by pink lighting every night from 6.30 until October 12 to raise awareness this Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation approached the Whangarei District Council’s property team this year to ask for support during the month.
So each night, the building is lit in pink, courtesy of Electrical Services from Northpower, who installed the lighting free of charge.
The council’s property and community services manager, Mike Hibbert, said it had coincided nicely with a new lease of life for the old building.
“The building is now almost fully tenanted, with the Citizens Advice Bureau, Northland Multiple Sclerosis, Northland Epilepsy, SPELD Whangarei, Literacy Whangarei, OSCAR Northland, Education Express, Whangarei Migrants Centre, Settlement Support and WINGs all installed,” Mr Hibbert said.
“It is becoming a real community hub and we are pleased with this outcome as the parties involved are paying rent which we can direct straight back into maintenance and improvements.”
Long-awaited improvements had been made, including new toilets and carpet and paint in some suites, and major repairs to the roof.
“The clock will be chiming again soon and we hope that will coincide with the lighting project, Mr Hibbert said.
Lighting the building pink during Breast Cancer Awareness Month means the old town hall joins the hallowed ranks of some well-known world sites that have been lit up to mark the month during the past nine years, including the Statue of Liberty in New York, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Niagara Falls, the Sydney Opera House and Auckland’s Sky Tower.
