Transmission

Northpower's expertise in the transmission sector has broadened extensively since 2007, with an array of projects completed for Transpower - and in Australia under the West Coast Energy business.

While Northpower has completed numerous specialist lines and substations jobs, we are about to embark on two significant multi-year projects for Transpower the national grid.

Northpower has traditionally worked on distribution systems (typically below 66kV and 110kV) and expended the skills developed (e.g. live line expertise) to carry out work on transmission networks (66kV, 110 kV and 220 kV).

Much of this work has been undertaken in partnership with incumbent Transpower service providers.

Northpower has carefully developed a group of qualified transmission line and substation trade staff accredited to work on the Transpower network. We continue to grow our capability in this field of expertise.

Among our key projects of late is the installation, testing and commissioning  of 14km of new 220kV cable to replace an existing section of transmission line in West Auckland.
 
In July 2012 we will embark on managing the maintenance of 66kV, 110 kV and 220kV transmission lines from the top of the North Island to just north of Auckland - along with the maintenance of substations in and around Rotorua and Bay of Plenty.

Northpower's transmission expertise:

• Fault response and emergency switching
• Scheduled maintenance (inspections, tests, services, repairs)
• Emergency repairs to faulty equipment and all unscheduled work that results from operating the network
• Smaller equipment replacement projects within the two maintenance regions - Bay of Plenty and Northland

Northpower’s dedicated transmission team is pre qualified and approved for 220kV and 110kV deenergised works. In addition staff are Transpower E1 and E2 trained and approved. We have adopted and developed transmission-specific policies and service specifications to meet the required transmission industry standards.

The team is capable of carrying out pole, insulator, cross arm and conductor replacements, conductor re-tensioning, tower upgrades and thermal upgrades to existing lines.

With the highest priorities being safety and quality our focus is on understanding clients’ requirements and deliverables to ensure a safe, consistent and high quality result. Expert planning and scheduling, attention to detail and a highly skilled team enable us to manage and complete each project to specification within time and budgetary requirements.

Northpower has close alliances with other contractors and customers providing access to specialist skills when required.
