Helicopter Appeal targets $150,000 in public donations
Northlanders are being urged to again show their generosity as the 2011 Electricity Rescue Helicopter Appeal nears lift-off.
Appeal envelopes will be distributed throughout the North later this month and Northpower public affairs manager Steve Macmillan hopes to at least match last year’s fundraising total of $264,360.
“Ideally we’d love to hit the $300,000 mark because this service is so critical for a region as geographically diverse as Northland— you only have to ask those who have benefited from the service to realise how important it is,” says Mr Macmillan.
“Without it, over 1700 lives would not have been saved in Northland since that first rescue mission back in November 1988. That’s a fairly compelling statistic.
“While we have the expertise of the pilots, paramedics, medical staff and the various emergency services to thank, the financial contribution of Northlanders and supporters who have donated over the years to keep the service operating cannot be overlooked.
“But the reality is, the service does not fund itself so it needs the ongoing support of us all. Every little bit people can contribute helps and ultimately it is a service that is here for the good of us all.”
The Electricity Rescue Helicopter has helped more than 12,000 people since its launch and completes upwards of 650 jobs annually —many of them life-saving flights to remote areas and challenging terrain.
Those who donate $5 or more can win one of 30 rides in the Electricity Rescue Helicopter. Meanwhile, Northpower and Top Energy will match donations dollar for dollar to a maximum of $150,000, says Mr Macmillan.
As always, all money raised in the Electricity Rescue Helicopter Appeal goes directly to NEST to help meet operational costs including flight crew training, pilot wages and insurance.
Donations can be made using the official donation form and freepost envelope delivered to household letterboxes throughout the Far North, Kaipara and Whangarei districts.
People can also donate by visiting any Northland ASB Bank or making an online payment to ERH Appeal—ASB Bank Account No: 12 3106 0046000 00.
