Fibre Showcase Proposed

Published on March 2nd 2009, 12:45pm

We have proposed to Government that our current Passive Optical Network (PON) based Fibre to the premise (FTTP) system can be showcased as a High speed broadband system that could be rolled out to other regions in New Zealand.

We have also offered an expansion that would involve the complete reticulation of an urban environment (Whangarei) with associated semi rural and rural areas totalling some 28,000 customers.

This would enable bench marking of construction costs for a nation wide rollout, and be of sufficient size to enable Telecommunications companies and others to develop voice, data and video (including HD) products suitable for the residential markets.

Our business model is identical to our electricity lines business in that we are a High speed Layer 2 (Ethernet) broadband infrastructure provider. We are not a retailer. Telco’s and others need only to connect to our gateway switch and we take care of the rest right through to the premise.

Utilising our electricity assets we believe we can reduce the overall rollout cost by a minimum of 50% when compared with underground reticulation.

We have developed unique cost effective construction methods leveraging our current asset and have obtained the necessary consents from both the Whangarei and Kaipara District Councils.

Our FTTP system is fully operational and supplying customers with 100MB Broadband in partnership with TelstraClear. The system is capable of supplying customers with broadband at speeds of up to 1 Gigabit.

We believe that our FTTP system based on PON technology provides a far superior system than using existing copper networks. The performance of copper based networks depends entirely on the distance of these cables and it really is a lottery for home and business owners as to their broadband performance.

We believe that this inconsistency of service on copper networks is not an investment for the future. FTTP and PON can provide guaranteed high speed performance to all targeted end-users. Significantly this technology is capable of being rolled out cost effectively to the rural community, a community that provides significant New Zealand exports but has been largely ignored by high speed broadband proposals to date.

We have the capability to be able to start a rollout within 3 months of finalising an agreement.
